Social Adversity: Being misfortunately unable to communicate with people on the same level as us. 2.à à à à à Some of the difficulties that he faces in daily life with his schizophrenia are that after his hospitalization, when he is on the medication he canââ¬â¢t react to his wife, baby son, or anyone else. Other difficulties that he encounters is that he has 3 characters which he can only see with him all the time, which he learns to ignore so he can live his life off the medication, resulting in being able to communicate with others, and soon being able to teach again, being still unsure of who is real and who is imaginary. Before his schizophrenia is diagnosed he is stuttering because as he says to Charles ââ¬Å"he doesnââ¬â¢t like people very muchâ⬠. 3.à à à à à Charles- Charlesââ¬â¢s role in John Nashââ¬â¢s life is to give him someone to talk to and to help Nash overcome the failure he encounters since he believes that it is improbable to fail, by doing this, he helps Nash find himself, and helps him come up with his economic equation that he later receives the Nobel prize for. William Parcher (Big Brother) - He helps John Nash find himself in the way that I believe he is helping his schizophrenia come out due to the missions which are given to him which involve cracking Russian codes. After Nash believes he was nearly shot at by Russian Spies, he becomes very scared of people in black and is always looking out the window for the Russian spies who he believes are going to kill him, and because of this his wife, Alicia calls a Marcy (Charlesââ¬â¢ niece) - 4.à à à à à His hospitalization is prompted by him being scared of everything, since he believed he was shot at by Russian Spies. His wife is getting scared by him acting so crazy, and always peering out the window looking for Russian spies. 5.à à à à à The thing that prompts his second attempt at being hospitalized is when Agent Parcher points a gun at Aliciaââ¬â¢s head, and because he believes that William Parcher is real, he pushes him but in the process also pushes Alicia, and scares her immensely. Johnââ¬â¢s reaction is upsetting as he dose not want to go there and wants to move on, without taking the pills and live a life where he can react to his wife and hold his son.

Work has been a driving force for all of the people living in the society today
Work has been a driving force for all of the people living in the society today. They devote most of their lives working, and they justify this act as something that they have to do in order to live. Some people associate working with earning money, but doesnââ¬â¢t end with only that. There are a lot more reasons why people work, and it can be rooted to the peopleââ¬â¢s needs, not the money, but the things that could be derived from what you earn. Meaningful work is a work with a purpose, not of monetary compensation, but with a deeper reason, either for the fulfillment of a personââ¬â¢s interest or for the welfare of other people (Samuel, 2007). Some consider working as something they need to do; something that could earn them what they need in order to fulfill their wishes. But for me, the concept of work is a lot different than how others perceive it. For me, work is the realization of my efforts in my younger years. I am studying so that I can be able to work with my field of expertise; thus Iââ¬â¢ll be able to exercise my talents to the fullest. If I will be able to do what I think I can do best, then Iââ¬â¢m sure all my efforts will be rewarded by a good payment, and when I am earning a good deal of money, then I could live a life that is free of financial problems. Well, it depends on the peopleââ¬â¢s perceptions; their view on something could be a manifestation of their perspective in life (Young, 2007). I am a person who takes things positively. For me, working is not a burden that we have to carry all throughout our lives. It is true that if a person doesnââ¬â¢t work, he will eventually suffer, especially if he is living on his own, and is not blesses with a wealthy family. But working shouldnââ¬â¢t hinder you from enjoying your life. I think of work as a way to practice the things that I can do best, and it doesnââ¬â¢t limit you to a single work alone. You can do various things, as long as you put your heart into it. It is only a matter of thinking that classifies work as a burden. Reasons why people work Working is also a way to express what you feel to your loved ones. Working for the sake of another person is a manifestation of love. When you work, you are able to afford things that are essential for their happiness. Working also entails responsibility. You hold yourself responsible in providing the basic needs of a person whom you dedicate your work to; your loved ones and family members. You seek to provide the basic necessities in life, like food, shelter and clothing through working and earning money to buy these things (ââ¬Å"Why Do People Work?â⬠2004). Working also entails social responsibility. I treat work as an obligation to the society. You are wasting your talents if you donââ¬â¢t work, and it means you are a waste of the society. Working also brings out the abilities of a person, and with those abilities, the society is able to produce quality outputs; art masterpieces like paintings and sculptures are the work of brilliant minds of the past, and they have worked their way in order to produce it. Working doesnââ¬â¢t only mean being able to produce an output. You need to put your heart into it, so that the output you create is really a product of hard work. Meaningful working entails a sense of responsibility from the person itself, and that they should treat every opportunity to work as an opportunity to show the people his talents; he should treat everything he does as a masterpiece and give all his effort into it. The product of a meaningful work is a meaningful output. References: ââ¬Å"Why Do People Work?â⬠à 2004.à Why do people work? April 12 2007. . Samuel, Alexandra. ââ¬Å"Meaningful Workâ⬠.à 2007. History Genocide Alert in Sudan Essay
Recently, newspapers and journals discussed the plight of the millions of people of Sudan as there has been the government sponsored genocide. This victimization of a few people has been discussed in the press as well as in the various websites. These various forums have condemned the atrocities committed against the innocent people. Hence, at different levels one can find the call for alert regarding the indiscriminate killing of large number of the people in Sudan. The Sudanese government has indirectly and sometimes directly sponsored the atrocities committed against the civilians. The government has encouraged the local militias to loot, murder and rape the innocent people in the southern region of Sudan. They have attacked the churches, buildings providing relief to the victims, and the market places. Ethnic and tribal warfare in the southern Sudan has been encouraged in order the keep the south divided. The government has destroyed the food supplies which have led to the death of large number of people due to starvation. People are persecuted based on their race, ethnicity, and religion. The main reason for this atrocity is that these people have opposed the imposition of extreme form of Islamic law. The government has been persecuting non Islamic and non Arabic people in an attempt to destroy those people who were politically opposed to the plans of the government. An important reason for this persecution is the attempt to control the oil fields which have been owned by the victims of the genocide atrocities. In fact, after the government signed agreements with the foreign oil companies, the atrocities against the civilians have increased. The government has used all the armaments and military vehicles to destroy the villages and areas inhabited by those people who opposed the government policies. Consequently, many civilians have been forced to leave their land as their villages, lands, churches, and schools have been destroyed due to the bombings. This government attempt to clear these lands has been termed as ââ¬Å"scorched earth strategyâ⬠. (Survivorsââ¬â¢ Rights International, 2001) However, the new settlements of displaced Sudanese have been earmarked for the future oil exploration which would imply that in the future the government may attack the people in this region. With the help of this genocide, the government has been able to multiply its oil revenues. However, a major part of this revenue has been spent on military machinery. Unfortunately, the government of Sudan believes that it can win the war with the help of oil money. This has led to killing of more than 2 million people. In addition to this, 4 million people have suffered internal displacement. Another 3 million people are facing starvation. In such a situation, international community including USA should pressurize the Sudanese government to stop its atrocities. (Survivorsââ¬â¢ Rights International, 2001) The victims have argued that the government of Sudan has targeted the ââ¬Å"blacksâ⬠as there is attempt to destroy the all the black population. This shows the racial and ethnic discrimination of the government actions. In the region of Darfur, even now thousands of people are dying due to the military attack and food shortage. This genocide has been noted by the US government agencies, international human rights bodies, and the United Nations. The displaced people are afraid of returning to their homeland because they are afraid of persecution. The Sudanese government has mainly attacked the Africans belonging to Fur, Zaghawa, and the Masaalit ethnic groups. The government sponsored militia is also termed as the Janjaweed who belong to the Arab tribes. Due to the ethnic wars, the civilians are suffering. This crisis has continued to bother the international human rights activists. United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2005) Many international government and non-government organizations have established their associations to fight against the atrocities committed against the particular ethnic and racial component in Sudan. For instance, one can notice the establishment of Genocide Intervention Fund (GIF) which is a non government association of the civilians. GIF has supported the UN supported African Un ion Mission in Darfur. The main aim of this association is to support the peace keeping forces to protect the life of the innocent civilians in Darfur. In fact, African Union needs greater funding in order to manage the financial requirements to send the troops, supply food, and equipments to the peace keeping soldiers fighting for the lives of the people in Sudan. GIF has started the campaign to protect the lives of the Sudanese from the government attack. In fact, it aims to send 100000 letters to the government officials urging them to take action against the Sudanese government. This organization has requested the support of the government officials and civilians to raise $100000 to fight against the atrocities of the Sudanese government. The UNO has commissioned few committees to submit report regarding the nature of atrocities committed by the Sudanese government. In January 2005 International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur report was published. This report gave information regarding the recent developments in Darfur. This report can be used by the international agencies to take action against the government of Sudan. However, there is difference of opinion among the permanent members of the Security Council. The US government wants to create an ad hoc tribunal for Darfur. However this can delay action for many months. Further, Russia and China, which have strategic trade ties with Sudan, also halted the decisive action against the Sudanese government. However, the US senior officials have accepted that genocide is being committed in Sudan. In spite of this realization, international organizations are reluctant to take action against the government of Sudan. (Preventgenocide. org, 2005) In spite of the statistics available regarding the genocide in Sudan, media did not give much importance to these events. However, the film maker Jen Marlowe decided to present the human face of the disaster in Sudan. This film is given the title: ââ¬Å"Darfur Diaries: Message from Homeâ⬠. Marlowe visited Darfur and the refugee camps in the neighboring region of Chad. Marlowe obtained information by interviewing the victims of the government sponsored genocide. The filmmaker has discussed with the children regarding their sufferings. Marlowe considers that children are the most vulnerable groups in the society. Further, it is necessary to provide protection to the lives of large number of civilians who face the threat of losing their lives and properties due to the government policy. The attempt of Marlowe has succeeded in providing a human face of the genocide in Darfur. This has also showed the failure of the journalists to cover this topic as very few journalists have covered the story narrated by the refuges in Chad. (Ellis, 2005) Recently, attempts have been made to redress the grievances of the victims. However, most of these attempts have failed due to the increase in the intensity of the conflicts and the international organizations have failed provide aid to the victims. Ellis, 2005) I learnt from the above research that greatest importance should be given to protect the lives of millions of people in Darfur. To achieve this objective, the members of the international organizations such as UNO should take immediate action against the Sudanese government. Secondly, the associations should increase the funding to help the peacekeeping forces to provide aid to the victims of genocide in Darfur. The media also should give more coverage to the developments in Darfur.

Pollution affects the health of all living thing. Essay
Many peoples, animals and plants depend on water for survival of life but because of water pollution all living things must suffer or die from the effects caused by water pollution. Man is busy inventing new things every day and the consequences of these inventions affect the land, air and stream and causes water pollution. Some of the causes of water pollution are industries trying to fulfill the need of consumers by inventing new products and creating jobs for people. Another cause of water pollution is the chemicals that people use on their lawns and gardens. Water pollution can also be caused by land movement, avalanche and erosion from the weather. Animal also causes water pollution but they are unaware that they are actually causing pollution to the stream, rivers and lakes. The effects of water pollution in our stream, lakes and ocean have a huge impact on the living creatures that uses the water for their habitat. When the beaches and lake are polluted, tourists do not spend time to visit there, animals also die from consuming garbage. Another effect of water pollution is the cause of an oil spill in the ocean which has a huge impact on the living creatures and wild life that uses the polluted water. It is important for individual living in this planet to prevent water pollution. The planet is very precious for all it living thing. One can walk, bike or use transit to get around. Individual should not put sediments, nutrients, toxic chemicals, pathogens in water. These are some of the thing people can do to prevent water pollution.
Feminism and Postmodernism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Feminism and Postmodernism - Essay Example In particular, the so-called postmodernist feminism has challenged the claims that observed differences between men and women are necessary and that women have an essence that justifies their subordinating position in society. Central to the postmodernist understanding of society is the belief that the grand or totalizing principles of modernity and the Enlightenment - including appeals to rationality, progress, humanity, and justice - have been completely undermined. This line of reasoning emerges from poststructuralist critiques of language, subjectivity, and representation. In other words, where poststructuralists criticized the foundations of modernism, postmodernists read these critiques as mandates for rejecting foundations altogether (Stabile 1995). European postmodernists, like Jean-Francois Lyotard, have expressed the belief that Marxism, like the Enlightenment in general, culminated in Stalinism because of its totalizing impulses. Some postmodernists have gone much further than this identification of Marxism with Soviet-style systems, holding Marxism responsible for all kinds of oppression. Twentieth-century Marxism has used the generalizing categories of production and class to delegitimize demands of women, black people, gays, lesbians, and others whose oppression cannot be reduced to economics. This kind of judgment dramatically displays yet another feature of postmodernism: its historical amnesia. Marxism and socialist organizations in general have been repeatedly marginalized and delegitimized by capitalism. Postmodernism is full of confusions and contradictions, nevertheless, it is based on some unifying principles such as non-critical and idealistic focus on the construction of real as well as examination of the concept of difference. For example, if the society is not able to identify any interests which might unite it, then the only mean to unify people is based on identity differences. This Marx's so-called unity in differences or the identity of interests shared by people and represented by the political institutions was rejected by postmodernists who did not accept any form of presentation in favour of the particular difference (Stabile 1995). Feminism From the first glance, feminism seems to be more accessible than postmodernism and refers to the females as the political unity with the identifiable electorate. Feminism shares with postmodernism the idea of rejection of historical materialism. Notably, the contemporary theories of feminism do not reject the idea of system and totality, but rather elaborates its own analysis in which male domination is seen as the alternative or confederate of capitalism. Thus, women, being oppressed by male dominating system, share the common interest to oppose it. At its beginning, feminism was both intellectual and political movement: to help women in understanding their oppressed position and to promote the changes in society in terms of gender issue. Early feminists organized as the distinct class with radical intentions (Tong 1989). Essentialism argument (the foundation of category "women" from biological perspective) and anti-essentialism argument ("women" seen as the historically and socially constructed group) are essential to understanding feministic assumptions. Essentialists believed that women have similar characteristics upon which political action can be founded. While, anti-essentialists claimed that labels "male" and "female" were not fixed

What role(s) does business play in politics, and what challenges and Essay
What role(s) does business play in politics, and what challenges and opportunities does this raise for effective and democratic governance - Essay Example In the light of globalization, global governance has emerged as a multilateral and poly centric process to define and implement global rules. In global governance, the corporate play active roles to address social and environmental issues and other concerns that are experienced all across the globe. Discussion Are firmââ¬â¢s economic or political actors? Whether firms are economic or political actors has become a debatable topic with the advent of globalization. The argument on the relationship between business and politics is based on the assumption of a regulatory environment, where in the public concern issues are addressed by the nation state level institutions. The nation state institutions also regulate the business behaviour in the country. The state institutions are therefore, the only political institutions that work for ensuring the well-being of the society. In contrast, business firms are generally considered as economic actors. Business firms use their political and l obbying strategies to influence the political system. Also, they take up corporate philanthropy as a part of their strategies. But these activities do not establish them as political actors that operate with the aim of addressing public concerns. Instead these activities of the business firm in the political sphere are more aimed at boosting their economic ends. However, over the last decade, the separations between the economic and political spheres have become blurred. With the advent of globalization, the national context of governance started losing its foothold. It was observed in many cases that the state system did not succeed in dealing with the transnational social and environmental issues, administering the rights of citizenship, regulating the economy, serving the interest of the public and in providing necessary public goods. These incidents of failure were seen many times worldwide due to the lack of proper enforcement mechanisms and the lack of essential resources. In these situations, often the private business firms intervened and filled in the void through their voluntary activities. In the current scenario, a number of multinational businesses have implemented voluntary regulation of activities and production of public goods. The companies have taken up responsibilities that were once into the foray of the government bodies only. The firms have started contribution to public education, health, protection of human rights, social security with the objective of filling up the gaps in the legal regulation processes and promoting stability and peace in the societies. Thus, now the businesses are operating as social entrepreneurs who serve public interest with the use of the resources in the business thus creating a distinct change in the political ideology throughout the world. Is the pursuit of corporate non-market/political strategy unethical? Although, the concept of a business firm occasionally taking up political activities is accepted with a broad consensus, yet a business actually being a strong political actor itself other than the governments still draws very less appreciation. The changing image of the firms from economic to political actors in global political scenario is highly contested. This is because this change challenges the existing theory of the role of business firms as economic actors in the society (Yves 351). Also, another reason is that this has caused the rise of substantial concerns about the impact of this change on democracy and public response all over the world. Internationally, only the states are known to have voting rights but international organizations often invite business firms to give their inputs in the

IT Professional Practice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
IT Professional Practice - Essay Example Covey states, "Having a particular attitude of mind can make a huge and positive difference to almost everything we experience in life." (Covey, S.) In other words, if I think successful than I can be successful. It is the ability to control one's environment. It involves self-determination, choice, and the power to decide response to stimulus, conditions and circumstance. Beginning with the end in mind gives me the ambition to work towards what I envision as an end result. Going accordingly to "first things first" will help to prioritize my time to accomplish the "urgent" things versus the just "important" things to reach my success. By always thinking with a "win-win" attitude, I can keep focused on my solution so I don't give up. I'm also going to first seek to understand then to be understood. I'm going to hear out the other person's position before stating mine so we can relate on a problem or solution. This is simple and effective, and essential for developing and maintaining p ositive relationships in all aspects of life. I can then synergize by putting my head together with others to come up with a possible solution. This is the habit of creative co-operation which is the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, which implicity lays down the challenge to see the good and potential in the other person's contribution.
